1. Botswana is currently experiencing heavy rainfall that has resulted in severe flooding, causing significant disruption to daily life. BONELA is deeply concerned about the widespread impacts of these extreme weather conditions, particularly on the health and wellbeing of our communities, and especially vulnerable groups.
2. Yesterday, the floods left many school going children stranded, some until late hours of the night, unable to return home due to impassable roads and submerged routes. In response to the worsening conditions, schools have temporarily closed to ensure the safety of learners and staff until the situation stabilizes.
3. This ongoing crisis serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of climate change. The flooding has created significant barriers to accessing healthcare. Many roads leading to health facilities are now impassable, preventing patients, especially those with chronic illnesses and individuals in need of emergency medical attention, from receiving the care they urgently need. This crisis exacerbates existing healthcare challenges, leaving vulnerable populations at even greater risk.
4. However, in these difficult times, we have also witnessed the best of human spirit. Numerous individuals have stepped up, offering accommodation to those affected and helping pull submerged cars from floodwaters, displaying selfless acts of kindness and solidarity. Ordinary citizens have come together to provide assistance and offer comfort to those who have been affected. Their selfless acts of kindness and solidarity serve as a powerful reminder of the strength of community and the unwavering compassion that emerges in times of crisis.
5. As we navigate this challenging situation, we remain hopeful that the National Emergency Operations Centre, chaired by the Minister of State President, is effectively coordinating flood response efforts. The National Technical Coordination Team, led by the Commissioner of Police, along with the Regional Energy Response Teams under the leadership of District Commissioners, are working tirelessly to support affected communities. We remain hopeful that their efforts will effectively mitigate the impact of the flooding.
6. BONELA urges everyone to stay safe and remain vigilant as we work together to overcome this crisis. Let us stay united, stay safe and look after one another during this challenging time.
