17.08.2022-BONELA PLEDGES SUPPORT FOR THE BOTSWANA NATIONAL GENDER COMMISSION TO END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND CHILDREN

The Botswana Network on Ethics, Law and HIV/AIDS (BONELA) commends the Ministry of Youth, Gender, Sport and Culture, through the National Policy of Gender and Development for the establishment of the Botswana National Gender and Development Commission which was launched on 15 August 2022 in Gaborone by the Honourable Minister of Youth, Gender, Sport and Culture, Tumiso Rakgare. The Commission’s mandate is to advice on gender issues, particularly policy and development and, service delivery, monitoring the implementation of the policy, liaising with Ministry responsible for Gender to promote guidance and support within government and externally on the promotion of gender equality and gender justice.

The Gender Commission is both representative and inclusive, with government, private sector, key Population, Youth, Persons with disability, Sport and Civil Society Organisations as members.

BONELA was elated to learn that the Commission will liaise with other stakeholders in parastatal organisations, private sector, and civil society organisations to develop appropriate programmes and strategies to move the gender and development agenda forward. BONELA therefore pledges it’s unwavering support to work with the Gender Commission to end violence against women and children. Addressing gender-based violence requires significant learning and knowledge sharing through partners and a long term program.
